The Christmas season is a time of giving and caring, but it is also a time to beware of scams and rip-off schemes. Thieves are well aware that people are financially vulnerable and more likely to fall for get-rich-quick trickery during the holidays.
San Jacinto County Sheriff James Walters recently issued a statement to remind people to beware of any offer that sounds too good to be true this time of year — or any other time, for that matter.
“It has come to my attention that there are many scams going around our community this Christmas season. Please be aware of anyone who contacts you by phone or mail and tells you that if you send a certain amount of money to them they will send you more money in return.,” said Walters.
“Also be aware of who you are talking to. Do not give out your banking or personal information (bank account numbers, social security numbers, driver’s license numbers, home address, etc.) over the phone or even on your computer, unless you know with whom you are dealing. Always remember, if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is not true,” warned Walters.
“We at the Sheriff’s Department wish you all a merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! Watch out for one another.”
